Honeymoon in Vegas (1992) Anne's Niche: Actress My Too Cents: Synopsis:
Jack comes up against more than commitment angst when the couple fly to Vegas
to tie the knot. He takes time out for a few rounds of poker before the
ceremony and ends up losing big to Tommy (James Caan), a pro gambler who's
willing to accept a weekend with Betsy in lieu of the $65,000 Jack owes him.
Tommy's dastardly plan is to whisk Betsy (who's a dead ringer for his late wife)
off to Hawaii for a romantic weekend that will convince her he's the man she
needs.
HONEYMOON IN VEGAS has its fair share of snappy one-liners and a goofy visual
sense that fits the material, with Bergman getting a lot of mileage out of an
Elvis look-alike convention taking place in the couple's hotel. Sarah Jessica
Parker does what little she's asked to do with style, and James Caan is clearly
at home playing a lizard who nearly has you thinking he's a nice guy. It's
Nicolas Cage, though, who walks off with the show, thanks to his trademark
blend of the sentimental and absurd. The final scene has him returning to
Vegas in a desperate bid to save his loved one. Only Cage could make that
return via parachute, wearing an illuminated Elvis costume, and still seem
believable. Viva Las Vegas.
